Ronald Bateman was born in Wales in 1947 and moved to Philadelphia in the late 60’s where he studied at Tyler School of Art. For many years he was represented by Marian Locks Gallery who sold this diptych. As his website states: “Bateman’s visually striking realist compositions often employ allegory, symbolism and a wry humour in a subversion of the still-life genre.” His work is held in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art among other institutions.
