Mildred Bunting Miller
Mildred Bunting Miller (1892-1964) painted this prior to her marriage in the nineteen-teens and is signed verso with her maiden name Stern. The stretcher also bears her estate stamp and the stamp of Butterfield’s, the auction house in California that handled her estate. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Garber and Breckenridge whose influences are in this painting. She also studied under Violet Oakley. She taught at PAFA and exhibited and is held in many museum collections. She won two Cresson awards for travel to Europe while studying at PAFA and this painting may have resulted from one of these trips and shows a steamship and felucca perhaps in the Suez canal or elsewhere in Egypt.
